Developer Basics Course
Professional Developer Intro
Becoming a professional developer means more than just coding well. You must be able think logically, organize your work and clearly communicate with your teammates. The best resource we’ve found in this area is Bob Martin’s book “The Clean Coder”. Your goal with this section is to read the beginning chapters, take them to heart and apply them to everything you do during your tenure at Admios.
Read The Clean Coder Chapters 1,2, & 3
Understanding Programming Languages Intro
Programming languages are plentiful these day. Each language has proponents and critics. The goal of this section is to get you to begin to think critically about languages and how they can be classified. Please review the following list and research any of the categorizations that you are not familiar with.
- Object oriented versus functional (you should understand what a prototype language is as well)
- Declarative versus imperative
- Compiled versus interpreted
- Strong versus Weak Typing (you should understand duck typing as well)
Programming Language Reading
- Read Hackers and Painters Chapters 10,11 and 14
- Read the final chapter of 7 Languages in 7 Weeks
Programming Language Exercises
- Pick one language from 7 Languages in 7 Weeks that you haven’t used before and go through the tutorials. Make sure to apply everything that you learned in the sections on clean code and testing!
- Check in all your code and be prepared to discuss the work you did in the morning scrum.
Clean Code Intro
Understanding the syntax of a programming language doesn’t mean that you know enough to produce professional code. In this section we’ll introduce some basic rules that should largely apply to all languages that will help you developer cleaner code.
Read Clean Code chapters 1,2,3,4,6,8, & 10
Testing Intro
Testing is an integral part of development. The goal of this section is to get you acquainted with the basic methodology behind the most common testing practices so that when you encounter them during your technical training you have a solid conceptual base on which to build.
